How often do cops check plates when driving?

i often wonder if the cops are checking my plate when it comes to a stop sign or red light, and a cop happen to stop behind me.
Do most cops check plates randomly like at a red light to cars in front of them? or do they usually have a reason before they do so?

We randomly check them, whether you are trying hard not to look at us when we pull up next to you or you are in front of us at a light. We don’t have to have a reason to run a license plate.
