Should my carbs be overflowing if my petcock is on “prime”, or should my float valve stop it?

There’s a fuel overflow pipe on the bottom of my carb and when it’s on prime it starts overflowing.
The floats are adjusted and I put a rebuild kit on it.

Firestorm – I have an inline fuel filter, so it can’t be any crud in the needle valve
I do have a small leak in my gas tank!

No, the needle and seat should control the flow of fuel. You said before that the tank had rust in it so I would guess that some crud has gotten into the float bowl and is holding the needle open. You are just going to have to really clean the tank out or the same thing will keep happening.
And an inline fuel filter wouldn’t hurt either.

hmmmmm. As you already have the filter, it must be worn needle and/or seat. She’s an old bike so you might have to get new parts but I don’t know how you would go getting them. 1973 was a long time ago… (though somedays it seems like only yesterday…)
