The Tubular High-Speed Linear Actuators: Empowering Progress
Generation of controlled motion from linear electric machines is a revolutionary development in the area of electro-mechanical force. The development has assisted in the rapid development of a number of industries with its effortless and precisive application of force in variable environments. The extraordinary advantage of linear electric actuators is marked with its ability to mobilize payloads in a straight line adding thrust force without the aid of any intermediate mechanical transmission such as crank shaft, gears or screws. Among the different types of linear electric actuators available to us, the tubular structure captures the imagination of the industrial and allied clients including their domestic counterparts due to its closed frame and the inherently absence of attractive force between the stator and the mover.
If a rotating motor is cut across the radial plane and “squashed”, a flat double‐faced topology occur. Thus the tubular linear topology is derived from the linear and flat single‐faced configuration rolling it up along the direction of motion. These transformations turn the stator of the rotating machine into the primary of the linear machine, which is provided with a variable or fixed frequency supply, and the rotor into the secondary, which is equipped with permanent magnet, with a multiphase winding or it is characterized by a variable reluctance ferromagnetic structure depending on the kind of the machine.
Due to the specific length of the machine, linear or reciprocating motions are possible only by an extension of the linear stator or of the linear rotor. This leads to the advent of the so called long stator or short stator machine. In real life applications both of them are used based on the appliance requirements, as for instance, short stator solutions are normally used in packaging and manufacturing sectors, while long stator types are utilized for transportation industries. The moving part of the linear machine is generally called forcer, mover or slider and is compatible both with the primary and with the secondary of the machine.
The tubular high-speed linear actuators are tubular shaped actuators with high speed motors. The actuators are perfect for any type of application and industrial or domestic use where high speed stroke is required. The generation of force in the tubular high-speed linear actuators depends on the speed of actuator stroke. As for instance, a force of 45 lbs is generated with an actuator stroke of 3.15 inches per second. Flat and tubular linear motors are used for controlled motions and servo actuation in high‐speed packaging and pick‐and‐place machines, in automated structure such as industrial robots, fast manipulators and automatic machine tool feeder. A few more utility areas are reciprocating compressors and refrigerators. All these applications share relatively low power requirement and they constitute the basic commercial demand of linear drives. They are often customized solutions.
Among the various linear actuators, tubular topologies with permanent magnet excitation are particularly popular, since they hardly experience typical assembly problems of linear open machines, conforming to a compact structure and a high force density. But the permanent magnets interact with stator core causing a disturbance force, which can result in negative effects such as vibrations, noises, positioning errors and non‐uniform movement at low speed. Such a disrupting force in linear actuators is the sum of two components: the cogging force and the extremity force. The cogging force is a result of the tendency of the magnets to align with the stator at positions where the permeance of the magnetic circuit is maximized and has a spatial wavelength depending on the pole number, the slot number and the pole‐pitch, whereas the extremity force depends on the interactions between the finite length of the armature core and the moving magnet, and has a spatial wavelengths of one pole‐pitch.They are perfect to be used in auto, marine and other applications due to the sleek look of the actuator. Some of the models can be combined with specific company rocker switches and mounting brackets. The mounting brackets are specifically designed for mini dc linear actuators and the rocker switches can be used to control the movement of the actuators. For wiring of the rocker switch to the actuators the company wiring diagrams can be used as an instructional tool.
This type of actuators with required specifications (stroke size, voltage or speed) can be available with companies providing the facility of modifications.
